Tom Coxworth

For over three decades, Folk Routes on CKUA has been a vital thread in the fabric of Canadian folk and roots music—thanks to the unwavering dedication of Tom Coxworth. A beloved broadcaster, tireless advocate, and community builder, Tom has championed live music in Alberta and across the country, shaping the folk landscape in countless ways.

From coast to coast, musicians have felt the impact of Tom’s support—through thoughtful interviews, the generous playing of their music, and consistent promotion of their shows, particularly in Alberta. His commitment to amplifying both emerging and established voices has made Folk Routes a trusted home for artists and fans alike.

Tom’s contributions extend beyond the mic: he’s volunteered at festivals, served on boards, and helped grow the community behind the scenes. Nationally recognized—including for his leadership in the Folk DJ organization and as a recipient of the 2015 Folk Alliance International Spirit of Folk Award—Tom’s influence is woven into the very heart of Canada’s folk scene. His voice is so familiar and beloved that he’s even recognized in airport lineups like a folk rock star.

And yet, in classic Tom fashion, he remains humble—often unaware of just how deeply he’s shaped this community. But those who listen know. His deep knowledge, careful preparation, and unmistakable passion turn each episode of Folk Routes into more than a radio show—it’s a journey through the living, breathing story of folk music.

The Board, Staff, and Volunteers at the Canadian Folk Music Awards acknowledge that we live, work, meet and travel on the traditional territories of Indigenous Peoples that have cared for this land, now called Canada, since time immemorial. These lands are either subject to First Nations self-government under modern treaty, unceded and un-surrendered territories, or traditional territories from which First Nations, Métis and Inuit Peoples have been displaced.
