Peter May has been a driving force in Alberta’s folk and roots music community for decades through his leadership, volunteerism, and commitment to strengthening the organizations that support the music. He has volunteered with the Calgary Folk Music Festival for more than 25 years and has served on its Board of Directors since 2020. He also spent 19 years on the Board of the Foothills Acoustic Music Institute, serves as Technical Director for the Canmore Folk Music Festival, volunteers with the Calgary Stampede, and is Artistic Director of the Nickelodeon Folk Club. An active musician himself, Peter brings both artistic insight and practical expertise to every role. Colleagues recognize him as a generous mentor whose knowledge, steady leadership, and passion for community have helped sustain and strengthen Alberta’s folk and roots music scene. Outside of music, Peter’s professional career is in risk and organizational resilience, experience that has further informed his contributions to the organizations he serves.

The Board, Staff, and Volunteers at the Canadian Folk Music Awards acknowledge that we live, work, meet and travel on the traditional territories of Indigenous Peoples that have cared for this land, now called Canada, since time immemorial. These lands are either subject to First Nations self-government under modern treaty, unceded and un-surrendered territories, or traditional territories from which First Nations, Métis and Inuit Peoples have been displaced.
