Why no CFMA 2019?

Why no CFMA 2019 Year?

Glad you asked! Responding to feedback from the previous Awards Weekends, the CFMA decided to move the weekend to spring instead of the previous December schedule. This move extended the timeline into 2020 prompting the CFMAs to use the Awards Weekend year, 2020, to identify the event, instead of the year submissions take place. Therefore, #CFMA2020 will be the 15th edition of the Canadian Folk Music Awards, and it will take place in Charlottetown, PEI, April 3-4, 2020. Submissions will open in April, 2019.

So you see, the only thing that really changed was the date of the Awards Weekend!

But why did CFMAs change the date? Notes CFMA Board Chair Grit Laskin “After 14 years, of nail-biting concern that flights are not delayed and roads aren’t snow-covered, along with the fact of venues typically programming holiday shows on the December weekends we’d always prefer, the CFMA Board has made the decision to shift its Awards weekend to the spring.  We found a spot on the calendar, early April, that doesn’t conflict with other Awards, or music conferences or showcase events for artists. This will be our new annual schedule, going forward, beginning with our first visit to PEI—a fitting destination to celebrate our 15th year!”

CFMA Board Member Rob Oakie adds: “We are so excited to bring the Canadian Folk Music Awards to Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, in 2020! PEI is home to a lot of great folk music and artists like The East Pointers, Catherine MacLellan, Vishtèn, Irish Mythen, Gordie MacKeeman and His Rhythm Boys, Lennie Gallant and so many more. We love our folk music and we love to throw a party so this is the perfect excuse to visit one of the friendliest and prettiest places in Canada. Come join us and get your folk on for CFMA 2020!”

Submissions will open for the Canadian Folk Music Awards (CFMA) in April 2019. The weekend’s focus events will take shape as two Awards Concerts, which are open to the public.
