(Mar 18, 2019 – HALIFAX) The Canadian Folk Music Awards are pleased to announce that the 2020 edition of the CFMA will take place the weekend of April 3-4, 2020, in Charlottetown, PEI. Responding to feedback from the previous Awards Weekends, the CFMA decided to move the weekend to spring instead of the previous December schedule, notes CFMA Board Chair Grit Laskin “After 14 years, of nail-biting concern that flights are not delayed and roads aren’t snow-covered, along with the fact of venues typically programming holiday shows on the December weekends we’d always prefer, the CFMA Board has made the decision to shift its Awards weekend to the spring. We found a spot on the calendar, early April, that doesn’t conflict with other Awards, or music conferences or showcase events for artists. This will be our new annual schedule, going forward, beginning with our first visit to PEI—a fitting destination to celebrate our 15th year!”
The CFMAs are heading to the East Coast this year, and for the very first time in CFMA history, the Awards Weekend will take place in Charlottetown. CFMA Board Member Rob Oakie says “We are so excited to bring the Canadian Folk Music Awards to Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, in 2020! PEI is home to a lot of great folk music and artists like The East Pointers, Catherine MacLellan, Vishtèn, Irish Mythen, Gordie MacKeeman and His Rhythm Boys, Lennie Gallant and so many more. We love our folk music and we love to throw a party so this is the perfect excuse to visit one of the friendliest and prettiest places in Canada. Come join us and get your folk on for CFMA 2020!”
Submissions will open for the 2020 Canadian Folk Music Awards (CFMA) in April 2019. The weekend’s focus events will take shape as two Awards Concerts, which are open to the public. Awards will be presented throughout both evenings, April 3 and April 4, at the Awards Concerts. These concerts combine the most loved events of the Canadian Folk Music Awards’ first fifteen years – the vibrant energy of the live music showcases and the awards gala. The Awards Concerts will capture the true heart of the folk community, while celebrating the nominees and the category recipients.
Established by Canada’s burgeoning and internationally-recognized folk music community, the awards currently boast 19 categories. Nominees are chosen for each category. A two stage jury process by 95 jurors located across Canada representing all official provinces, territories and languages determine the official recipients in each category.
