CFMA Seeks Proposals for Bilingual Publicist
Location: CFMA is located in Ottawa, Ontario, and this position will be hired regardless of the location of the candidate. Meetings will be held remotely via Zoom (or similar), and communications will be by phone or email.
Contract term: October 2023 to May 2024

Job Description
The Canadian Folk Music Awards is looking for a Publicist to support internal and external communications initiatives for CFMA’s April 2024 live event in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, and pre-event milestones (Nominee announcement, Unsung Hero announcement, and 2025 Submission Announcement).
Responsibilities
Reporting to the CFMA Communications Officer, the incumbent will:
- Plan and execute strategic and proactive communications plans to ensure clear, consistent, and appropriate messaging for organizational operations (submissions, nominations announcement, live event, etc.)
- Develop a communications strategy
- Develop key messages and core concepts and positioning
- Plan and execute media junkets and other media events
- Attend the CFMA event to provide on-site Publicity supervision and support (travel to and accommodations at the live event for one person will be covered by CFMA)
- Build and maintain relationships on behalf of the CFMA with print, radio, online media journalists, artists, and other partners
- Develop communications materials for internal and external communications (press releases & backgrounders)
- Supervise the CFMA social media work by a third party (we have identified this party and they will be under contract to create assets and post on social media on the our behalf until the CFMA event in 2024)
- Work with the graphic designer, website coordinator, and social media specialist
- Monitor media and social media coverage
- Arrange live social media coverage during the CFMA events
- Respond to media requests
- Create a post-mortem media & social media campaign report
- Create thank-you content for the funders and the sponsors
- Lead an educational session with the entire board, via Zoom, covering:
- Good social media practices to ensure that Board members project a unified, consistent message
- An overview of crisis communications best practices
Qualifications
- Proven track record in the communications/media/music industry
- Bilingual (English/French)
- Superior written and verbal communications skills in English and in French
- Strong multi-tasker, organized, efficient
- Ability to work well under pressure
- Exceptional interpersonal skills, tact, and diplomacy
